They were inseparable — even in death. Patricia Mendez, 62, and her granddaughter Ava Lucia McWhirter, 8, were killed in a head-on collision with an SUV that was driving the wrong way on U.S. 84 near Anton on Monday. Family members said the two were always together.

“She wouldn’t leave her grandmother for no reason,” Mendez’s brother, Rick Medrano, said of the girl. Medrano and his wife, Lana, were traveling to Texas from Louisiana, joining many grieving relatives also making the trip to Anton on Tuesday. Mendez was called “Tisha” by those close to her, Medrano said. One of 11 siblings, she had a large extended family, including more than 30 nieces and nephews. She and husband Emilio had one daughter. McWhirter is survived by her parents, David and Alejandra McWhirter, and her brother and sister. She was the middle child.

Medrano said the two were on their way to pick up Mendez’s mother after her dialysis appointment in Lubbock on Monday — a routine trip Mendez made every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Mendez’s 2004 Subaru station wagon was hit by a 2007 GMC SUV driving on the wrong side of the divided highway shortly after 9 a.m. The driver of the SUV, 51-year-old Jeffrey Howard, was airlifted to University Medical Center. Howard was reported to be in satisfactory condition the day of the crash. Supervisors and the spokesman at UMC did not return phone calls Tuesday for status updates.

Bryan Witt with the Texas Department of Public Safety said Howard had not been charged with a crime as of Tuesday afternoon. Witt went on to say the crash is still under investigation, so charges are still a possibility. “We treat every crash the same,” he said. “We’ll investigate it thoroughly, and if any criminal charges need to be filed, we will file those.

At this point it’s a crash investigation.” DPS officials told A-J Media they suspect high speed to be a factor. It is still unclear if alcohol was involved. A witness on the scene who did not wish to be identified said he was the first to call 911 about the SUV traveling at a high speed on the wrong side of the road.

The witness, a medical professional, said after the crash he and four others pulled Howard from his vehicle and were checking his vital signs before his SUV burst into flames. According to the man, a sheriff’s deputy from Shallowater who was sent out to intercept the SUV was the only one on the scene at the time, and truck drivers and a dozen other witnesses blocked traffic before firefighters, emergency medical services personnel and other law enforcement arrived. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t do anything for the woman and her grandchild,” the witness said. The Medranos say they are devastated and are still asking why this happened. The family is awaiting an explanation and more answers from investigators. A GoFundMe account called has been started to help the family with funeral expenses, and the Anton Class of 1996 established the McWhirter-Mendez Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo & Citizens State Bank in Anton.
